Ras Al Khaimah

From miles of pristine sandy beach to understated (and overstated) elegance, exclusive refinement and a myriad of fun and culturally enriching options, there's much more to Ras Al Khaimah - or RAK as it's often affectionately shortened - than meets the eye. Typically seen as the quiet, more laidback emirate for families, it offers a world of recreational options beyond the sophisticated all-inclusive resorts.

Introducing RAK

A little-discovered jewel in the U.A.E, Ras Al Khaimah is one of the latest emirates to emerge as a desirable sun and sea destination. It has an abundance of natural beauty and charm to lure travellers seeking a good dose of beach perfection with top-notch facilities.

Especially ideal for family breaks, the vast majority of resorts in Ras Al Khaimah operate under an all-inclusive programme and include a variety of attractions designed for tiny tots, children and teenagers, without forgetting about the parents either! This is the perfect blissful retreat for a classic family beach holiday with a dash of emirati sophistication.

While only a 45-minute drive from Dubai Airport (DXB), Ras Al Khaimah feels a world away from the hustle and bustle of the U.A.E.'s entertainment capital. Nicely secluded amid desert dunes and crystalline sea and with no ambitious sky-scrapers to obstruct the view, this is definitely the emirate to come to when in search of a subdued, tranquil getaway without forgoing any luxuries.

Recreation: hiking, fishing, golfing, surfing and partying

It'll come as no surprise to learn that, as a major beach resort destination Ras Al Khaimah is more than well-equipped to offer holidaymakers entertainment options galore.

Without moving too far from your hotel you can engage in numerous fun pursuits from fly-fishing to playing golf (there are two championship golf courses) surfing the waves at the beach or engaging in all manner of motorised and non-motorised water sports. You can choose to dance the night away at special beach parties held during the winter months, complete with live DJ sessions and live music groups, and there's also a fun waterpark called Iceland with a variety of splashing slides.
If you're an active traveller that loves nature you can visit the Al Wadi Nature Reserve, go for a desert safari adventure as you ride the dunes, enjoy a full Bedouin camp experience or book a tour to climb the Jas Mountains. There are certainly plenty of adrenaline-filled options to go around!

Culture – exploring the local heritage

The capital of the emirate is also called Ras Al Khaimah or RAK City and it's divided into two main sections, Old Ras Al Khaimah and Nakheel, found on either side of a creek. If you want to venture out of your beach resort and experience local culture, visiting the capital's centre will give you an insight into daily life, in particular the bustling market sitting at the tip of the western creek in the old part of city. In fact, there are two – the Old Market and the Fish Market – with the latter adjacent to a 150-year-old Mohammed bin Salim mosque, which is of incredible heritage value.

If you want to dig deeper into the local culture, then a visit to the National Museum is a must. Having originally been the house of the royal family since its construction in the 18th century until 1964, it includes a varied array of ancient objects and fine ornaments that make it the wealthiest museum in the whole of the U.A.E. For more encounters with history you can also visit the Dhayah Fort dating back to the 16th century and beautifully poised on a mountain overlooking the Gulf.
